Sustainability and responsible consumption: Italians ask companies for concrete commitments

The Participatory Observatory on the Circular Economy, created by Nespresso Italiana and SWG, surveyed Italians’ opinions on sustainability and trust in the fight against climate change. The results show that sustainability is now perceived as a broad concept, involving the environment, economy and rights. However, there is also widespread distrust about its impact: 61% of Italians fear that efforts against climate change are insufficient, and 47% admit to having a limited understanding of sustainability.
The research highlights the importance of concrete actions by companies: 62% of those interviewed ask them to actively contribute to improving the lives of local communities, and 8 out of 10 Italians consider the company’s commitment to sustainability a determining factor in their purchasing decisions. Recycling and waste reduction are priorities, considered more relevant than offsetting initiatives alone.
Italians, however, are skeptical: many young people doubt the real effectiveness of the circular economy. The priorities for intervention for those interviewed include environmental protection, youth education, and support for research and social organizations.
The agri-food industry, especially coffee, is indicated as the sector on which to focus more. 30% of Italians ask this sector for recycling and reuse projects, as well as more sustainable packaging. Nespresso, involved in initiatives such as “From Bean to Bean” and “Breathing Cities”, continues its commitment, aiming to combine recycling and community support, with concrete interventions in Italy.
